Remedies like this were already part of how care happened in my family long before I had words like herbalism, apothecary, or formulation for it.
In her documented work with Puerto Rican healers, María Dolores Hajosy Benedetti recorded malagueta being steeped in glass jars with plants like árnica, eucalyptus, camphor, ruda, geranium, and lemongrass.
Keeping alcoholado alive matters to me because Puerto Rican traditions have been pushed around by colonization, displacement, and gentrification for generations. Things that come from everyday Puerto Rican life get taken out of context, renamed, made trendy, and sold back to us.
We’re already seeing that with things like coquito matcha, where coquito gets treated like a flavor trend instead of something with a place, a history, and actual people behind it.
I don’t want malagueta to become another plant somebody “discovers” after the Puerto Rican context gets erased.
Our first Alcoholado de Malagueta y Árnica is macerating now with fresh malagueta leaf from Manatí, Puerto Rico, plus Mexican árnica, rosemary, and eucalyptus.
I check the jar, shake it, watch the color change, smell it, and leave it alone when it needs more time.

How to Use
